First off… The Live at the Hammersmith CD / DVD is amazing. I am thrilled that an early show has become available! I’d like to ask the band a couple of questions in regard to “Come Up and See Me (Make Me Smile)”…. And I apologize if these questions have been asked before. What made you decide to perform a song from Steve Harley? From what I understand, it was written after the original line up of Cockney Rebel walked out on Steve Harley. What ultimately attracted you to the song?

And lastly, has there EVER been a consideration to record this song in the studio for a future release… perhaps as a B-side again? Thanks! And I look forward to hearing your new material soon! Steve

“Growing up in the UK, in the 1970s, we were lucky to experience extraordinarily diverse music. We were very much influenced by “glam rock,” and Steve Harley’s Cockney Rebel were at the center of this scene. What attracted us most to “(Come Up and See Me) Make Me Smile” was that it is a bittersweet song with a hugely uplifting chorus. It is quite hard for all of us to agree on any song when we decide to do a cover version, but this one was a unanimous choice and we felt that the original still sounds as good today as when we first heard it.

We were considering a studio version long ago, but it was so popular as a song in the live set that we simply ended up releasing the version from HAMMERSMITH at the B-Side of “The Reflex.” We doubt we’d re-visit it at this point, although we did play it a few times during the reunion tour. Arcadia So Red The Rose – 2 CD + DVD
EMI Catalogue Cat No: 606 6812

Arcadia were formed by three members of Duran Duran, Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor. They released one album ‘So Red The Rose’, which went Platinum, and reached #30 in the UK & #23 in the US. The album featured four singles, ‘Goodbye Is Forever’, ‘The Promise’, ‘The Flame’, and UK/US Top 10 hit, ‘Election Day’.

Along with three Duran Duran members, there was also a wide range of famous guests on ‘So Red The Rose’ including; David Gilmour, Sting (backing vocals on ‘The Promise’), Herbie Hancock & Grace Jones (spoken word on ‘The Flame’ & ‘Election Day’).

The additional DVD was originally released on VHS in 1987. It follows the filming of five clips from the album ‘So Red The Rose’ & the fascinating combination of directors, locations, behind the scene footage & photographic montages which come together to give an insight into the world of video production. The collection of videos including Arcadia’s first single ‘Election Day’ are shown in full, including Dean Chamberlain’s rarely seen interpretation of the song ‘Missing’.

All Music Guide describe ‘So Red The Rose’ as “the best album Duran never made”.

In December, John Taylor came to New York to work with the Danimals, the winning artist from the Toohey’s Extra Dry competition. After listening to many entries, Mark Ronson chose them to fly from Australia to work with some great talent of Mark’s choosing like John, Nick from Kaiser Chiefs, Sean Lennon, Santigold and more. The final track, written and produced in Tooheys Extra Dry: The Lab, will feature as the soundtrack for Tooheys Extra Dry’s next national advertising campaign, and the winner’s journey will be filmed from start to finish – resulting in a fly-on-the-wall documentary for release in March next year.

The Toohey’s TED THE LAB site is running footage of this experience, which includes working with John in the Studio. Keep checking the TEDTHELAB site for the latest updates on this very cool project! (please note, it takes awhile to load)

Hi Katy, This past week, I received my copies of the Hammersmith DVD and Rio collector’s edition cd, both of which I absolutely love! Listening and watching has inspired the following 2 questions:

1. I have a feeling I won’t be the only person to ask this. First THANK YOU to the band for finally including the Lonely in Your Nightmare video on this DVD! It’s one of my favorite songs. The version included is different from the one familiar to U.S. fans. That version featured the black and white shots of London interspersed with the scenes from Sri Lanka, while this new one is entirely Sri Lanka images. I was wondering if this was specifically re-done for the Hammersmith DVD or did this version always exist?

FROM EMI: “That’s the master version. I can only assume it was edited at a later date for the US market but what is on the DVD is the original version.”

2. I looked back through the Ask Katy archives and didn’t see this question. I’d like to know more about the process of bringing a saxophone into the band’s sound. Was this always the plan? Did they ever consider having a sax player as a permanent member?

FROM NICK: “We never considered having a sax player as a permanent member, however I do believe it’s a very powerful and expressive musical instrument when used at the right time. In fact, the saxophone solo on “Dirty Great Monster” is one of my favorite moments on the RED CARPET MASSACRE album.”

A short one: Wednesday January 20th, the band returned to their London studio to review the tracks we recorded last year for the new album. We are due to commence work with Mark Ronson again during the first week of February. The backing tracks are mostly complete on fourteen different songs, I still have a little recording to do, but we plan to concentrate on Simon’s vocals through this next period.

The kids are all right (possibly even better)

As Gen Y gives way to the Information Generation, the youth of today take interest in the tunes of their parents and grandparents. And because of accessible technology, they can learn all about it
Four 19-year-old girls sit in a sub shop in Boston talking about music.

“I thought Hall and Oates were black when I first heard them,” says Nikkina Hankins to her friends, “and I thought Chuck Berry was white.”

Hankins and her friends share their opinions on their favorite acts, which effortlessly run the gamut from contemporary artists to delta blues and swing musicians from the 1930s.

They are part of an age group that could be renamed from Generation Y to the Information Generation. Technology and accessibility of information have cultivated an eagerness within young adults to learn more about the music that came before them and an appreciation for their elders that may even bridge the generation gap.

“I definitely feel like I’m more self-aware that I want to expand my knowledge of everything and culture myself,” says Hankins’ friend Layne Wineland. “I think of it being back then and just try to educate myself.”

But the Information Generation is only a part of this perfect storm that is washing away barriers between age groups.

“I think the generation gap, as it was called in the ‘60s, has gradually eroded, and a lot of it has to do with the Baby Boomer generation itself and its reluctance to get older and its need to be as cool as their kids,” says Adam Hanft, who considers himself a decoder of consumer culture, and has written a book called “The Dictionary of the Future.” Incidentally Hanft’s word for older people are using technology to stay young is “bo-tech.”

And while the Information Generation takes an interest in understanding the Boomers and beyond, the elders are also able to see what the kids are doing.

“Now, grandparents are updating their Facebook statuses just as often as their teen and tween grandkids,” says Ashley Dos Santos, a self-professed tween social marketing expert and an account supervisor for Crosby-Volmer International Communications. “When a new slang term or pop sensation hits the market, formerly out-of-touch parents no longer have to wait for their children to clue them in. One quick YouTube search for ‘Justin Bieber’ will have them singing along with their kids to the same hit songs during afternoon carpool.”

And once those kids aren’t embarrassed about their parent of grandparent singing along, that is when the generation gap is finally gone for good (or bad).

‘All You Need is Love’ (and free wi-fi)

Somebody who doesn’t need bo-tech to stay young is 92-year-old Sid Bernstein, who has his own ideas of what is bridging the generation gap.

“The Beatles have filled the gap,” he says. “They came at the right time, and they’re still here.”
We should probably point out that Bernstein might be a little biased in that he is the first person to have ever brought the Beatles to the U.S., and he has just recently written the forward to Judith Furedi’s new book on John Lennon. But Bernstein has a point. Not only has the Fab Four’s Rock Band game become a bestseller since its release last June, but figures released by Nielsen SoundScan — the company which compiles the Billboard charts — last month found that the band sold more than 11 million copies of their compilation “1,” since its release in November of 2000, making it the biggest seller of the decade.

“I see lately very young people singing the songs,” says Bernstein. “It hasn’t stopped and it never will. They just have a language that goes beyond borders. It’s universal.”

‘Hungry Like the Wolf’ (for information)

Are these generation gap-bridging technological advancements all positive? Duran Duran bassist John Taylor delivered a speech at a UCLA celebration of the 40th anniversary of the first message sent over the Internet in October. In his talk, he pondered a few of the negative effects of this progress, such as the demand on artists to Tweet every spare thought, and how the thrill of the chase has disappeared for music lovers, because they can find whatever they’re looking for in a few clicks.

“Anybody that has half a clue about how to surf the Net has access to their own reference library in a way that we didn’t,” says Taylor.

Lest it sounds like he’s a bitter old man, Taylor also credits the Boomers that popularized the theory of a generation gap in the first place, as being a key component to bridging it.

“Well, there was a much bigger gap, certainly between me and the kind of music that my parents were listening to, which was sort light classical, I suppose you could say with the odd sort of Perry Como or kind of crooner thrown in,” he says. “Kids that are 18 today, they’ve got parents who were into Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and the Clash or whatever, so it’s a little bit harder to say, ‘Oh God, your music’s so uncool, Dad.’ And I think actually that generation of dads take a great pride in the music of their generation.”

Dear Katy, I was listening to the Dub Mix of ‘I Don’t Want Your Love’ today and i’ve always wanted to know who says in the middle of this mix “Dub the track” ? It’s also used in the regular 12″ ‘Big Mix” at the start of the track but only in a stuttered ‘du-du-du-dub’ not the whole phrase.’ Is it one of the band saying this or is it a sample that remixer Shep Pettibone placed in himself – or even it’s something he found on the master tapes he was given to use to mix the track. thanks. Yours Vinyl-tastically, IzzY

““Dearest IzzY, We are somewhat troubled that this has troubled you for so long. Unfortunately, we are not the perfect candidate to relieve your curiosity as we simply haven’t got a clue….we could safely say that no member of the band would have made such an utterance at that time, so the best guess is that Mssr. Pettibone is responsible. Feel free to drop us a line once you’ve had him confirm this. Yours curiously, The Band.”
