story from storytellers

February 26th, 2001

Hi Katy! I saw the superb gig Duran Duran did on VH1 Storytellers and when Simon presented Save a Prayer he told the story behind it. He said that it came out from a song called “If you could read my mind, love” and that this song inspired him to write another Duran Duran song. Which one is that?? BTW, I think all you guys do a great job here on the web. Thanks, David/Sweden

“Ah yes, It didn’t actually inspire a whole song – just the doo doos on Hungry Like the Wolf.

*sniff* uhm..Hi everyone.. My name is Emily and I/m a young DD fan (age 13)I live in Sweden so please understand that my english may not be the best!! Right now I/m down with a cold and I/m really bored so I do what I all ways do when Im bored and that is to watch my DD tape I recorded few years back with “storytellers” and “Greatest hits” and videos ETC ETC. my question for simon is: In storytellers you said that you were crazy about a song in the 70:s that inspired two Duran Duran songs. One of them was “Save A Prayer” But you never told us which was the second song!!! I would love to know!//E

“Ok the song in question is “if you could read my mind (love, what a tale my thoughts would tell)” by…..and I want to say James Taylor – but it isn’t it’s by someone else who’s name’s just gone completely out of my head.Any way there’s this bit in the verse, in fact the “what a tale my thoughts would tell” bit and it matches up almost perfectly with the doodoos in “Hungry Like the Wolf” well not exactly, coz that’d be plagiarism now wouldn’t it.If yer intrestdid the S.A.P. bit is the the beginning of the chorus “Don’t save a prayer for me now” which kinda matches the “And I don’t know where we went wrong…….” bit in the not James Taylor song. Geddit? whoosh…s” EDITOR’S NOTE: HE MEANT GORDON LIGHTFOOT, AND THERE IS ACTUALLY ANOTHER “ASK KATY” SOME WHERE IN THE ARCHIVES PERTAINING TO THIS AS WELL.

elvis tv special and vh1

March 18th, 2002

Hi Kathy, First of all, thank you and the guys for bringing www.duranduran.com to this stunning level of interactivity. This is more than any DD fan could ever dream of! Hope Andy, Roger, Simon, John and Nick don’t get sick of feeding our curiousity any time soon ;)) My question is — What is ‘Elvis Comback Special’? Nick said this to Simon on VH1 Storytellers after they stopped playing ‘A View to A Kill’ intro. Simon started explaining what it is, but he couldn’t finish because the band went ahead doing another take of the song. Thanks! Alexey

“Yes, it’s the TV special that Elvis did in 1968 or 1969 where he wore the black leather jeansuit. The greater part of the show was in the “casual style” and in the round to a well lit crowd. I guess this was to lend an air of intimacy and approachability to an artist who had become more reclusive and distant over the years. He was surrounded by an audience of mostly very photogenic young ladies. You can check it out on vid it really is a seminal piece. s”

Wow! What an improvement on the Web site. I now see where you are going w/ it … very cool! My question is.. do you guys have any pull with VH1? They have advertised many re-airs of DD’s storytellers, but they have yet to actually do it. It has only aired the one time…the night of the debut. Have they given you any feedback on why they keep pulling the re-air dates(they even pulled the Sept. 27th one that was advertised on this site)? And are they planning any re-air dates in the future? I know that several fans have e-mailed VH1… and one person even put together a petition. Thanks for your info and help! -Kristin

THANKS FOR THE NICE E.MAIL KRISTIN. ACTUALLY, VH1 LOVED THE SHOW DURAN DURAN DID FOR THEM, THE CHANNEL IS IN THE MIDDLE OF SOME RE-STRUCTURING AND A LOT OF DATES GOT SHIFTED AROUND BECAUSE OF IT. VH1 HAS PROMISED TO AIR IT AGAIN SOON, BUT WE DON’T HAVE AN EXACT DATE. THE PETITION SOUNDS LIKE A COOL IDEA THOUGH, SO LET US KNOW IF YOU SEND IT!
