nighboat t shirt

May 27th, 2004

Hi Katy- This question is for John.  There is a debate on the message board between a few of us concerning your shirt in the ‘Nightboat’ video.  Some of us think it says, “Denny’s” and others think it says, “Jenny’s”.  Are either of these correct?  Or does it say something totally different? Curiously awaiting your response so we can put this to rest.  Cheers! ~ TammyD2

” “Benny’s”. A Sydney bar that was a poplular haunt of ours back then. John “

burning the ground

March 7th, 2004

Having (at last) viewed (and re-viewed) the Greatest DVD, I have a question regarding the “Burning the Ground” video.  I was just curious whether Duran Duran had creative control over the clips that were used in the video?  More specifically, I was curious why the clip of the capsized DRUM was used in a video that was predominantly video clips of the band, and what Simon’s thoughts were on its inclusion? Happy 2004!
Michelle Chicago

“Hey Michelle you might not think that it showed me in a particularly flattering light but I always felt that it added the depth of reality to what could have been taken otherwise as a “vanity” clip. s”

how did THEY feel about the VMAs?

September 4th, 2003

Dear Katy, this question goes to all members of the band:
First of all BIG CONGRATULATION on winning the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD!!! You deserve it and I am so happy for you!!!!Now, after having had a few nights of sleep since the big event, I wonder how you think about the whole thing. In various messageboards, fans complained about the way this award was presented to you. Personally, I think that some things obviously went wrong during the Awards Show, but hey – that’s live! Are you satisfied with the way you got the award, are you just happy you received it at all, no matter how it was presented to you, or do you feel that you would have preferred it somehow different? What are your feelings concerning that matter?

Anyway, I am really proud of you and want to say: the other half out there is there because of YOU!!!Best regards from Munich, Germany,Susie

“Firstly, we are obviously all thrilled to have received the Lifetime Achievement Award from MTV. We had abslutely no idea that we were going to receive it this year. We had agreed to give an Award as we were scheduled to play in NYC the night before the ceremony. It all happened so quickly that we weren’t really aware of what had gone wrong until afterwards. Clearly, there was meant to be a short compilation of Highlights from some of our videos screened before giving us the Award. It is unfortunate that there were technical problems but during live tv these things do happen. NR”

working with belinda c

June 23rd, 2003

Hello Andy! I would like to know what it was like working with Ms. Belinda Carlisle and if I recall you were also in the video too.  Please correct me. (Was it “mad about you” video?) Monica from Toronto, Ontario

“Sweetheart”, is the word that springs to mind.  I played on a few of her first album tracks; vaguely remember being in the video – she was straight and clean, I was not… at the time of course. Andy T. “

mini sleeve editions

April 23rd, 2003

Dear Katy, The other day while on the Virgin records site I noticed that there are a couple of Duran album releases out on the 30th June2003. It states that these are mini sleeve editions of the albums Duran Duran and 7 and the Ragged Tiger.
A few questions then;

1) Could you confirm the releases.

2) I would like to know whether they’ll be re mastered editions like the Rio release a couple of years back.

3) Is there going to be an official press release.

Thanks, Anthony

FROM EMI: “As for the remasters we are working towards a June 30th release date but much depends on band approval. There will be an official press release when details are firmer. The albums will be remastered and initially be in limited edition minisleeves but will not be enhanced with videos as we want to save them for the potential Greatest DVD later in the year.”

chauffeur vid

February 26th, 2003

Dear dd, the video for “the chauffeur” is such a provacative video, yet I have to admit, when I listened to the song (before seeing the video) I had imagined a totally different scenario. My question is: were there any different ideas for your videos other than the ones used? If so, how did you choose which ideas to use (especially for the chauffeur)? Love, F.

“I am sure there probably were lots of other idea at the time, but the one we made clearly won the “People’s Choice” Award and there were no re-counts. I have to say, I kind of liked the video! NR”

Hi Katy, This question is for Nick. In the “Serious” video Nick is seen chewing/chomping/smacking on a piece of gum throughout the video. I was told years ago this was because Nick disliked the song so much that he decided not to be “serious” in the video. Is this true? Every time I watch it I crack up. Thanks so much and I can’t wait for the new album! Nicole in San Francisco

“Now if I had thought of that story at the time, that is what I would have told everybody. I can’t say that it is one of my favorite songs we ever wrote, but it seems to have matured fairly well – I like it more now than I did then. As for the gum, I can’t remember how it came about, think I must have just been in one of those “chewing” moods. NR”

I’ve always wondered what kind of relationship did Roger have with Duran Duran when he was in the video for Perfect Day? Did Roger want to reunite with Duran Duran then or did he still want to remain out of the band? What changed his mind? Thanks Katy and Roger! Mike V, Akron, OH

“Michael-during the ‘Perfect Day’ period it was purely a ‘ old friends’ getting back together for fun relationship-there was never any real intention for me to return as a full member of the band. I think it was Andy coming back in and the Idea of the original five playing together again that made being fully involved in the new DD album a hard thing to resist!!Roger”

paula before american idol!

August 23rd, 2002

Hi Katy, I was reading the current issue of People Magazine and in it was an article on Paula Abdul. It mentioned that she choreographed videos for Duran Duran (among others) and the only ones I could think of were Notorious amd I Don’t Want Your Love. Was this a misprint, or did she choreograph the female dancers in one of those? Thanks! Tamii Trent

“PAULA, BEFORE SHE BECAME AN ICON ON AMERICAN IDOL, CHOREOGRAPHED DURAN DURAN’S “NOTORIOUS” VIDEO.

where did he go?

August 18th, 2002

Hey Katy!Question for you or the band. I don’t think Simon would remember this. It’s from 82. Where on Earth did Simon jump off into at the end of the Planet Earth video? I saw it this morning and I got curious. Thanks so much! Katie aka RR78

ACCORDING TO ALL OF THE GUYS, DEEP IN TO THE ABYSS (AND HE HAS BEEN TRYING TO CLIMB BACK UP THE SHEER, GLACIAL FACE EVER SINCE!)

destroyed by mtv?

August 9th, 2002

I have a question for any of you 5 to answer: Do you feel that MTV has slighted you even though you were one of the bands that basically put them on the map?

AS WITH EVERY COMMERCIAL ENTERPRISE, THEY MUST FIND THEIR ROUTE TO MAKE THE BUSINESS WORK FOR THEM. THE BAND FEEL WHEN MTV FIRST STARTED, IT WAS WITHOUT DOUBT A LEADER IN THE FIELD OF MUSIC. SINCE IT GREW INTO A FULLY FLEDGED NETWORK, IT’S PRIORITES HAVE ENEVITABLY CHANGED. HOWEVER, THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH MTV HAS ALWAYS REMAINED POSITIVE BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY NOT SUPPORT EVERY RELEASE FROM ARTISTS THEY HAVE CHAMPIONED IN THE PAST, THE BAND DO BELIEVE STRIVE TO PLAY THE VIDEOS THAT THE PUBLIC DEMAND.

existentialist new moon on monday

June 30th, 2002

Hi Katy! There are 2 questions I have about the New Moon video. First, what is the French guy saying in the very beginning of the video (after “Ladies and Gentlemen..” can you or someone else translate? lol :) 2nd, why are there 2 different versions? There’s the one on the Greatest video collection, and the one which I have seen on VH1, and is also available on Launch.com. Just curious.. Thanks! Anne K. :o)

I SPOKE TO THE GUYS IN THE STUDIO AND NONE OF THEM KNEW THE TRANSLATION OFF THE TOP OF THEIR HEAD. SIMON AND NICK THINK THEY COULD TRANSLATE IF THEY WERE TO SEE THE VIDEO NOW, BUT THEY DON’T THINK IT WAS ANYTHING EXISTENTIALIST. THEY BELIEVE THAT ONE VERSION OF THE VIDEO IS LONGER THAN THE OTHER BECAUSE OF THE PHILOSOPHY THAT THERE IS NO EXISTENTIALIST REASON FOR THIS!

queen mab's speech

April 18th, 2002

Hello Katy, Great job with the web site! It is by far the best band site I have come across. Anyway, I have always wanted to ask Simon how he came to use the Queen Mab speech from Romeo and Juliet as part of the intro to the Night Boat video. It just fit the video and song so well! I have also wanted to ask him if any of “The Bard’s” other work has been an inspiration for a song or lyric idea. Just curious. Can’t wait to hear the new album. Cheers, Matt

SIMON SAYS: “Coz that was the one I remembered best when Russell asked me if I knew a good a quote to use in Nightboat vid.s”

where's that gee-tar?

February 24th, 2002

Hello I’m an Andy Taylor fan & would like to know if Andy still has the black Yamaha SG guitar. At the time of the bands music videos you always seen him with this guitar. I could never find one for my self to buy in the yearly 80’s . I also play the guitar and have to thank Andy for his style and sound that he has made with Duran. As I know that chic was a big influence on the band at the time i was learning to play i was into heavy rhythm style guitar then i heard Duran in April of 81 and on Easter Sunday my mother gave me Rio as a present & i played the hell out of that LP. sorry to get off the subject about the guitar I’ll keep it short. thanks Scott from ohio

“Yes, I still have the guitar, it’s totally bastardised at this point but it still sounds good and my son uses it these days.Andy T.”

milton keynes

February 15th, 2002

Katy and the boys, I was recently perusing my ever growing collection of Duran & related vinyl when I came across the UK 12″ release of Plant Earth. The photo on the front cover shows the guys larking about being arty in amongst some trees and shrubs but yet the photo was taken indoors?!?! What I noticed about the photo is that, the actually place that the photo was taken is the spitting image of Milton Keynes ( in the United Kingdom) indoor shopping centre. Could you ask the guys if they recall this being taken and if not to check an original 12″ sleeve to confirm or deny this for me as it has bugged me for years as I live in Milton Keynes. If this is true, then on a sad note I must report that the whole tree/shrub affair where the photo was taken may no longer exist as the whole indoor site is being re-furbished. I cannot help thinking a little bit of Duran history will have disappeared for good.

YOU ARE CORRECT! “Well done, the photos were indeed taken in Milton Keynes in 1980. It was the first major session that Duran Duran did with a photgrapher called Andy Earl. We went on to work with him for several years. He covered the videos in Sri Lanka and also shot the photo on the inside of the RIO album. Nick”

payback is a ….

February 12th, 2002

Hi Katy! This question is for Andy! Andy – did you ever get John back for dumping you overboard (in the Rio vid)? Love ya tons! Christie

“One of the greatest unscripeted moments of our video shoots, and I am a crap swimmer, but the next time we are near water well I may just….anyway I will let you know. AT.”

did you hafta swallow?

October 3rd, 2001

I have a question that may have been answered elsewhere over the years, but I’ve never seen it posed, nor answered. In the “Hungry Like the Wolf” video, did Simon swallow the water that was squeezed into his mouth from that disgusting
looking rag? Just curious! Caprice.

I ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW THAT TOO: “Curious or capricious- makes no difference to me. Yes dear it was a filthy rag if I recall correctly and true to say that as video director Russell Mulcahey yelled “cut” I did in fact spit the offensive liquid straight into the eye of the poor unfortunate sinhalese squeezing the rag.

September 24th, 2001

Hi Katy,I heard a live duet of ‘Linger’ that Simon sang with Dolores O’Riordan . It isthe most beautiful duet I’ve ever heard. Do you know if it appears on any cd?Also is there a video of this concert? Is this the only song they did together? Thanks much!Rachel Denver, CO
